Replacing Annuals
May is the time of year to replace
your annuals. The most common summer plants are Marigolds,
Caladiums, Begonias and Salvia (which come in red, purple
and white). It is also not too late to fertilize your lawn,
shrubs and palms if you missed the spring application. (It
might be a little too hot for weed & feed fertilizers.)
You should probably use a turf builder fertilizer that has
a higher nitrogen blend. Nitrogen is the first number represented
on the label; a 28 –30 is considered a turf builder
because it promotes growth and that dark green color you see
in healthy well - kept lawns. If your lawn is already full
and thick you might consider using a fertilizer blend such
as a 12-6-8. Most lawn fertilizers will last for about 3 months.
For your shrubs and palms you should use a palm special that
has most all of the minors needed for plants in South Florida
including, Ixora Nora Grants and should be applied twice per
year. Your annuals should be fertilized with a slow release
fertilizer such as Ozmacote and applied once when planting
and again in three months.
