Weed and Feed Fertilizer

Weed and feed fertilizers are used in the springtime. However due to the climate in South Florida, fall is a good time to get a jump on those pesky weeds. The biggest reason our lawns become infested with weeds is that we don’t cut back on the watering when the weather gets cooler and the days are shorter. The proper watering technique is to water more at each watering interval but less frequently. What I mean by that is, water long enough to apply 1 1/2–2 inches of water on your lawn per watering. Then don’t water again for say two days depending on the weather. This way the water has a chance to get down to the roots where it does the most good, and promotes a deep root system. The soil is generally more moist down deeper due to less evaporation and cool temperatures. Which means that once you establish a deep-rooted lawn you won’t have to water as often.

Frequent watering (every day) leaves the surface always wet and creates the perfect conditions for the weed seeds to germinate, and spread throughout your lawn. The problem is compounded by the fact that the grass growth slows down due to the shorter and cooler days, giving the weeds a chance to dominate and ultimately take over. One word of caution about using Weed & Feed fertilizers is they don’t know the difference between a weed and an annual such as impatiens, begonias and other delicate plantings. You might want get a little hand-spreader to distribute the fertilizer around your annuals. Generally trees and hard- stemmed shrubs are not affected by the weed & feed fertilizers.
